Why: Lifesigns considers a chest x-ray an extension of its physical examination. The chest x-ray allows our physicians to evaluate the status of the lungs and diaphragm as well as the heart size (a significant issue in the presence of high blood pressure), bone density and degenerative changes in the thoracic spine (a reflection of bone health in general).
What: A chest x-ray is obtained at baseline testing. Repeat chest x-rays may be obtained every one to three years at the physician’s discretion if the individual has a history of respiratory symptoms, smoking or known lung disease.

Why: Some 13 million Americans suffer from COPD, or chronic lung disease, and 120,000 die each year. The number of deaths due to COPD has nearly doubled over the past two decades, with the most dramatic increase occurring in women. In 2000, COPD killed more women than men.
What: Lung function is evaluated using state-of-the-art spirometry equipment.
